Imperial Beach, San Diego History

The Most South western City in the United States. Imperial Beach is a city in San Diego County, in the San Diego-Carlsbad metro area. The history of Imperial Beach starts in March 1769 with a Spanish expedition.
Imperial Beach became a town in 1910 and became an incorporated city on July 18, 1956.

In June, 1887 R. R. Morrison, a real estate developer, filed a subdivision map with the clerk of San Diego County. The map referred to the area as South San Diego Beach. It covered land from 5th Street to 13th Street north of Palm Avenue and between Palm Avenue and today's Imperial Beach Blvd. Mr. George Chaffey purchased several plots of land for subdivision with the intention to create a summer retreat for the people of Imperial Valley. This region was named "Imperial Beach". Today there are approx. 30,000 residents that call Imperial Beach "home sweet home".
