La Jolla Cove

La Jolla History

La Jolla became incorporated as part of San Diego in 1850. However, there were no permanent settlers in this section of town until In 1869, brothers Daniel and Samuel Sizer each bought an 80 acre plot of land off of today's La Jolla Blvd. The La Jolla land sold for what amounted to $1.25 an acre- land which would be more than $1.25 million an acre today.  Like the Sizer brothers, Frank Botsford purchased a plot of land, but Mr. Botsford also went a step further. He was the first to develop La Jolla property, earning his title as "the father of La Jolla." With the help of George Heald, who purchased one-quarter interest of this property, Frank Botsford surveyed and subdivided the land.Frank Terrill Botsford arrived by boat in 1886 and described La Jolla as simply "magnificent." Mr. Botsford was the first person credited with developing property in La Jolla and was later referred to as the "Father of La Jolla" because of this. Botsford acquired investors including George Heald, and subdivided the property.  Botsford subsequently auctioned off the pieces of land.

Philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps moved to La Jolla in 1896. In 1924, while recovering from a broken hip, she became interested in medicine and founded Scripps Hospital and Scripps Metabolic Clinic. These organizations eventually became The Scripps Research Institute, and two of the core providers now comprising Scripps Health—Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and Scripps Clinic. Scripps 1915 residence is now the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla, California

Scripps died in La Jolla in 1932 at the age of 95, and her ashes were scattered.
